the softest layer: How Window Furnishings Complete a Room
There are certain elements within an interior that can quietly change everything. Window furnishings are one of them.
Often considered towards the end of the design process, sheers can completely transform how a room looks and feels. They soften natural light, add movement and texture, and bring warmth to a space.
At PSCO, we see window furnishings as part of the overall design of a room, working alongside furniture, art, lighting and textiles to bring everything together.
More Than a Practical Addition
While window furnishings offer privacy and light control, they can also have a big impact on the look and feel of a space.
Sheers can diffuse harsh daylight, soften harder materials and add another layer of texture. Even the way they are installed can change the proportions of a room. Ceiling-to-floor sheers, for example, can draw the eye upwards and create a greater sense of height.
As Kellie, our Interior Designer, puts it, “Nothing makes a room feel more special than having filtered light softly streaming through sheers.”
It’s a simple detail, but one that can completely change the atmosphere of a room.
Choosing the Right Sheer
Like selecting a rug or upholstery, choosing window furnishings means considering how they work with everything else in the room.
Colour, texture, weight, transparency, length and fullness all play a part. There are practical considerations too, including privacy, natural light and how the room is used.
For Kellie, this starts with understanding how the window furnishings will work day-to-day.
“It is important to consider whether the sheers will stay closed or whether they will be opened regularly. We think about the aspect behind the window, the practicality of moving the sheers, and how much sunlight will be coming through them.”
These considerations can help determine the right fabric and style, as well as whether sheers work on their own or should be layered with blinds or heavier curtains.
Often, the best choice isn’t one that stands out. It’s one that complements the rest of the space and feels like it has always belonged there.
Considering the Whole Room
This is also where working with an Interior Designer can make a real difference.
Rather than choosing window furnishings on their own, a designer considers them alongside the furniture, materials, colour palette, proportions and functionality of the room. Looking at these elements together helps create a home that feels consistent and considered.
While sheers might seem like a finishing touch, thinking about them earlier can also help inform other choices, from furniture placement through to colour and texture.
A room can have beautiful furniture and still feel like something is missing. Often, it’s the softer layers that bring it together. The right rug, considered lighting, art, textiles and window furnishings all contribute to how a room ultimately feels.
Through our Interior Design service, we consider these details together to create spaces that feel personal, comfortable and complete.
