DESIGNING FOR LONGEVITY
KELLIE’S APPROACH TO TIMELESS INTERIORS
In an industry often driven by trends, Kellie’s approach to interior design is refreshingly grounded. For her, great design isn’t about what’s “in” right now, it’s about creating spaces that feel genuinely personal, functional and enduring.
At the heart of her work is a belief that homes should support the way people actually live. Families, pets, routines, and personality all play a role in shaping her decisions and it’s this client-led mindset that gives her interiors their timeless quality.
INVESTING WHERE IT MATTERS
When asked where clients should invest, Kellie is clear. A well-made sofa, a quality rug, considered window treatments, and thoughtfully designed built-in cabinetry form the backbone of a home. These are the pieces that work hardest, both visually and practically, and when chosen well, they anchor a space for years to come.
Rather than filling a home with fleeting details, she encourages clients to focus on these foundational elements first. They create a sense of permanence and cohesion that can evolve as tastes change.
DESIGNING BEYOND TRENDS
For Kellie, trends are rarely the starting point. Instead, longevity and functionality lead every decision. Materials, finishes, and furnishings are chosen based on how they’ll perform over time and how well they suit the client’s lifestyle and whether that means accommodating children, pets, or the rhythms of daily life.
KNOWING WHEN TO BE BOLD AND WHEN TO HOLD BACK
Colour is where Kellie often allows herself to be bold. Used thoughtfully, it can bring warmth, personality, and emotion into a space. But restraint plays an equally important role, particularly with elements like window treatments, where simplicity helps maintain balance.
That said, there’s no single formula. Every decision is guided by what makes the client feel most at home. Some people are naturally drawn to colour but lack confidence in how to use it. Others find calm in softer, lighter palettes. Neither is right or wrong, it’s entirely personal.
LISTENING BEYOND WORDS
Understanding a client’s comfort level with colour and boldness is as much about observation as it is conversation. During the presentation stage, Kellie watches closely as clients respond to different spaces and imagery. She will take a mental note of body language when particular colours or styles are presented, whether the client seems to light up or they may pull back.
She notices what clients gravitate towards, how they react emotionally, even the colours they wear themselves. These details inform the concept direction and ensure the final design feels intuitive and authentic.
Because, ultimately, good design isn’t about imposing a vision. It’s about listening well enough to translate someone’s spoken and unspoken preferences into a space that feels like home.
